While there are differing opinions on this subject, I stand with the theory that modern hard drives and operating systems don't generally require the task of defragmenting. Simply put, over time, your program files get scattered throughout your hard drive, like a messy closet, forcing the computer to spend more time searching for the files it needs to open. Older hard drives were slow and this fragmentation caused noticeable lags in performance, hence the need to defragment the drive, and put the files in closer proximity to each other. Current hard drives are not only markedly faster, the operating system does a better job of keeping the file system in a cleaner, and more organized state. Defragmenting can be physically hard on the read/write head of a hard drive, and can actually shorten the life of the drive. All that being said, you don't need to defragment anymore.
